Stay in a luxury wooden lodge nestled among indigenous forest overlooking the Rufiji River…
Stay in a peaceful lodge set on the shores of Tanzania’s biggest river: Rufiji. Mivumo River Lodge is a boutique property with just 12 wood chalets nestled among indigenous forest. Each one has a sun deck that showcases views of the river, with its own plunge pool and outdoor rain shower. The design is a mix of classic Edwardian – think crystal chandeliers, four-poster beds and claw-foot bathtubs – with rustic Makuti ceilings and wooden furnishings. Guests really enjoy the views from the rooms, often you can spot buffalos, hippos and crocodiles down by the water.
We’re surrounded by a dense forest that’s particularly green and lush during rainy season. If you love nature, this is a beautiful place to simply relax and take in the surroundings. You might like to lie by our pool after an early-morning game drive, or perhaps have a massage at the spa. Dining takes place in our restaurant, which is perched on a timber deck overlooking the Rufiji River with all its animals; or we can arrange bush meals so you can dine in the wilderness.
Our private reserve is set right on the edge of Nyerere National Park so you can spend your days exploring on game drives with our experienced driver-guides. Many people don’t realise that Nyerere is four times the size of the Serengeti, so there’s an endless amount to see across different landscapes. You’ll travel in our custom, open-sided safari vehicles which are great for viewing wildlife. All of our friendly guides have been here for years and know where to find the animals. You’re likely to see herds of buffalos, elephants, giraffes, lions, hartebeests and even rare African hunting dogs if you’re lucky.
For a completely new perspective, take a walking safari through our reserve, where a naturalist will point out African plants, as well as insects and animal tracks. Other activities include two-hour river boat safaris where you can see everything from hippos and crocodiles to elephants bathing and lions coming to the bank for a drink. Many guests like to visit the nearby hot springs where you can bathe in warm, sulphurous water surrounded by forest scenery. Of course, the best way to end the day at Mivumo River Lodge is to take a boat to our special sandbank spot for cold sundowners by the water.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
