Tour Zanzibar’s UNESCO-listed Stone Town

Look out for wooden dhows gliding across the water at sunset from Stone Town, propelled by their white sails…

By Dagmar Marrocco
Programme Manager for Alfred&

Get lost in Stone Town’s maze-like alleyways, where architectural treasures lurk around every corner and the smell of spices fills the air. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the historic jewel in Zanzibar’s crown and well worth leaving the luxury of your beach resort to explore for a day. In this timeless city, the streets are lined with Omani forts and sultan’s palaces, which mingle with humble merchant houses and busy bazaars where Zanzibaris peddle carvings and colourful spices.

A tour of Stone Town will help you get to grips with the city’s bewildering history. Stops include Queen singer Freddie Mercury’s childhood home and the sobering former slave market, which was once one of Africa’s largest slave trading ports. You can spend hours strolling the streets, photographing Stone Town’s famous, intricately carved teak doors. In between shopping and sightseeing, take a break at Darajani Market’s juice corner, where you can watch sugarcane being squeezed by hand and buy a cup to taste.

At sunset, join locals at the Forodhani night market. As the call to prayer rings out from nearby mosques, watch the sky burst with colour as the sun sinks towards the Indian Ocean. Look out for wooden dhows gliding across the water, propelled by their white sails. Traditionally used as trading vessels, these Arabic boats have navigated the ocean here for centuries. Wander market stalls full to the brim with seafood and grab yourself a Zanzibar pizza: dough stuffed with a dizzying array of fillings – from Nutella to cheese – folded and fried on a huge hotplate.
