One of our most popular excursions, a visit to the Nxhoga village, reminds us that a large part of travel essentially revolves around meeting new people and that often it is the interactions with different cultures that can be the most rewarding.
The small village of Nxhoga sits within Eagle Island Lodge’s private concession, about a 20-minute drive from the lodge, meaning its community rarely receives visitors and thus offers an authentic insight into local life. Many of our guides are actually from the village and will introduce you to the elders and neighbours like they would an old friend.
You’ll gain an understanding of the local commerce such as basket weaving and fishing. A conversation may lead to a tutorial in the traditional way of hut building out of clay and reeds. Browse the small market, churches and bakery in between chatting to enthusiastic children who rush up to greet you, welcoming you with broad smiles.
I think this activity gives our guests an understanding of the impact of the tourism and how their visits affect the local area. Many visitors have found this experience so rewarding they ship care packages back to Botswana on a regularly basis. After all it’s those deeper connections that are the most touching.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Louise, who's travelled extensively in Botswana. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife in Chobe, the village chiefs who'll give you an insight into local life and the helicopter pilots who can land you on an island in the Delta never visited by humans before.
