The hotel is set right on Turtle Bay and faces west, so you can enjoy the sunset over the ocean with a cocktail on our sandy beach…
We call the Oberoi Mauritius ‘paradise on sunset shores.’ Mr Oberoi believes that location is everything, so he searched Mauritius to find this special place on the northwest coast. We’re set right on Turtle Bay, one of the country’s two marine parks – you can jump off the jetty and snorkel among turtles and butterfly fish. The hotel faces west so every day guests can watch the sunset while having a cocktail on our sandy beach, with views of the Moka mountain range and the shimmering lights of Port Luis in the distance.
Our villas are set over 20 acres of tropical landscaped gardens so it’s a tranquil, private space. Every Sunday we have a guided nature walk where you can learn about our plant species and see the 17th century French ruins on the property. The most stunning is our Gunpowder Room, which is now a restaurant where we serve Mauritian food such as mangrove snapper, curry and flambéed pineapple finished off with local rum shots infused with flavours like vanilla and pink peppercorn. It’s an atmospheric dining experience with chandeliers, antique wine barrels and wrought iron décor.
The resort was designed to feel like a Mauritian village. Our thatched-roof villas are our pride and joy, each with full-size heated pools. There are wonderful lifelike tortoises and dodos etched onto the buildings as well as stone Buddha statues imported from Indonesia. We have four restaurants including the Gunpowder Room, so you can enjoy a different dining experience each night. Have a meal in our beautiful herb garden, on the sunset beach deck or poolside at One The Rocks, where you can choose your own seafood and meat to BBQ.
One of the unique aspects of the Oberoi is our Touching Senses activity programme which offers complimentary daily wellness activities like yoga, tai chi and meditation. We wanted to bring Mauritius to the hotel so we invite locals in to give painting, rum tasting and stargazing classes. We can even arrange visits to a local silversmith or Hindu temple. Then of course there’s our two beautiful ocean-front pools to relax by (one is adult-only) and our spa, which has a steam room and open-air pavilions for African therapies.
Guests tell us that they love the Oberoi staff and often mention them by name in their reviews. Our team are all from Mauritius and 60 percent have been with us over 15 years – it’s like a family. People also mention the sense of peace they get while staying here, as well as the beautiful sunset beach show they enjoy every evening.
