You’ll get to see how Zanzibar’s precious spices are produced, from seed to harvest, and then exported all over the planet…
Zanzibar is world-famous for its fragrant spices and on this tour, you’ll learn how they’re produced at a local farm. We’ll take you to one of the island’s top plantations, which has been growing various fruits and spices for generations. I’d recommend the tour because you get to see how these precious spices are produced, from seed to harvest, and then exported all over the planet.
During the half-day tour, you’ll encounter different spices including black pepper, vanilla, ginger, turmeric, cardamom and cinnamon. One of the most famous spices you’ll see are the cloves, which are dried in the sun and then squeezed to extract their natural oil. Locals often use this oil to make medicated soap that heals skin problems. Along the way, the guide will tell you all about how the spices are grown and answer any questions you have.
The farm is also home to many exotic fruits like jackfruit, passionfruit, mango and papaya. Many visitors enjoy watching one of the guides climb a coconut tree while singing the Jambo Jambo Bwana song to cut some fruit for you to sample. Often, they’ll also make a crown from the coconut leaves or perhaps a small natural bag to give to guests. It’s a very fun, informative tour and essential to understand Zanzibar’s history and culture.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
