Your guide will shine torches into the darkness, where you may spot bush babies staring back at you…
Take a night game drive to catch a glimpse of nocturnal wildlife, from aardvarks and bush babies to big cat hunts. Exploring our 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy after dark offers a completely different perspective from your usual day drive. The area borders the Maasai Mara Reserve and is famous for its high density of lions, leopards and cheetahs. Fig, who stars in National Geographic’s Jade Eyed Leopard was born at Porini and can often be spotted here, especially after dark.
You’ll drive around with one of our expert Maasai guides, many of whom have been with us since the camp started 16 years ago. They know most of the big cats in the area by name and have watched many of them grow from cubs. We use bright spotlights that have a red filter on them which is extremely important for protecting animals’ eyes, particularly the sensitive cats’ eyes. This allows us to run night drives ethically without harming the wildlife.
Your guide will shine torches into the darkness, where you may spot bush babies staring back at you, or perhaps aardvarks and the white-tailed mongoose. Big cats are notoriously more active at night so you might spot them hunting. Once, I was lucky enough to see a group of female lions who’d just killed a wildebeest and we were able to get right up to the kill. You could hear the guttural sounds of the lions feeding and watch the young cubs come up to investigate – it was a surreal, raw experience.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Becky, who's travelled extensively in Kenya. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the safari rangers, local village chiefs and camp managers you'll be talking about for years to come. Start planning today, call us, email an enquiry or arrange a phone or video appointment for ideas and advice.
