Dining under the stars, listening to the rumble of the forest and seeing the ‘smoke’ from the Falls gives you a real sense of place…
Even though I’ve worked here for 25 years, I never tire of the sound of Victoria Falls. I can walk there in 10 minutes from Ilala Lodge and, for me, each visit is like the first time. In the rainy season the spray is visible from almost anywhere at the hotel.
The Victoria Falls National Park borders the front of Ilala Lodge and it’s just a short walk into town for shopping and dining. All of our 73 rooms face the garden and it’s not unusual to see grazing warthog, hippo and even an elephant herd from your balcony.
The hotel is family run and we pride ourselves on our personalised service. Not surprisingly we get a lot of repeat guests, who enjoy coming back to the same room. Our family rooms face the Falls and we have a dedicated pool and kids’ menus. There are lots of activities on offer and cruises on our traditional river boats are very popular. We offer breakfast, lunch and sunset cruises and guests sometimes charter them for a special occasion.
Our fine-dining restaurant, The Palm, is one of the town’s most popular restaurants and it does a magnificent breakfast for our guests. The setting, overlooking the garden, is beautiful. Dining al fresco, under the stars, listening to the rumble of the forest and seeing the ‘smoke’ from the Falls gives you a real sense of place.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Adele, who's travelled extensively in Zimbabwe. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember – the ranger who can show you the best game viewing and fishing spots on the Zambezi, the guide who’ll introduce you to ‘moonbows’ at Victoria Falls and the locals who’ll share their dinner with you.
