There are genteel echoes of the past everywhere you look in Ooty. The lushly planted slopes of this ‘Queen of the Hill Stations’ – 7,000 feet up in the Western Ghats – are dotted with neo-gothic churches painted the colour of buttermilk and airy colonial bungalows hung with neatly planted window boxes. There’s a botanical garden complete with a bandstand, an expansive boating lake and even an authentic steam railway to puff you up here from the heat of the plains below. It’s like stepping back in time to the days of the Raj.
But a trip to Ootacamund, to give it its full name, is no mere exercise in nostalgia. The pretty-as-a-picture mountain scenery and benign climate that inspired the British to create a summer retreat here in the 19th century is just as appealing two centuries later. People come to walk through scented woodlands or tea plantations the colour of ripe limes, to soak up panoramic vistas hazed with blue from eucalyptus trees and flowering kurinji bushes and maybe even test their swing on one of India’s most challenging golf courses.
