Discover one of Tanzania’s hidden safari gems: Ruaha National Park. Named for the Great Ruaha River, this roaring ribbon of water carves a path through the park’s heart and acts as a wildlife magnet. Mountains rise like craggy giants to the south and west, the plains scattered with twisted baobabs and piles of kopjes. Endless grasslands transform from sun-scorched gold in dry season to luscious green peppered with wildflowers during the rains. In Ruaha, flocks of migrating birds fill the skies between February and April, joining resident populations of kingfishers, hornbills and raptors in a rainbow spectrum of avian life.
An estimated ten percent of the world’s lion population stalk Ruaha’s plains in prides as large as 20, joined by thousands of elephants and huge herds of grazing game. The landscape here is also dotted with ostriches and giraffes, as well as rarer black-backed jackals and even a small population of endangered wild dogs. What’s more, you’ll have this wildlife paradise practically to yourself, as only one percent of Tanzania’s tourists make it to Ruaha. With just a handful of remote safari camps in the park, visiting feels like a true African adventure, where you’re treated to private wildlife sightings and unspoilt views.
