The shores of Lake Eyasi are home to some of Tanzania’s most ancient tribes who cling, in centuries-old tradition, to their hunter-gatherer heritage. In this rural Rift Valley landscape, volcanic mountains rise from the earth and flocks of great white pelicans and yellow-billed storks pluck catfish from Eyasi’s shimmering depths. In rainy season, the lake draws pods of hippos, as well as bird-watchers who come to marvel at swooping grey-headed gulls and African spoonbills. Towering, tropical doum palms dot the open terrain, which stretches towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara.
Over millennia, distinct tribes of bushpeople have developed a symbiotic relationship with this timeless landscape. Armed with bows and arrows, the Hadzabe people continue to prowl the forests as they have done for over 10,000 years, hunting small game, while women dig tubers from the ground and pluck fruit from the baobab trees. They trade their spoils for metal arrowheads created by the Datoga people, skilled blacksmiths and semi-nomadic pastoralists who wear beaded animal skins. To visit these remarkable tribes is a privilege and offers a rare glimpse inside Tanzania’s authentic tribal heritage.
It’s best to visit Lake Eyasi’s tribes with a local guide, so ask our Tanzania team to arrange ethical cultural experiences with the Hadzabe and Datoga communities.
