Porini Amboseli Camp lies in the private Selenkay Conservancy, which was set up by our founder Jake Grieves-Cook and the local Maasai community over 25 years ago. Although it’s part of the Amboseli eco-system, we’re set outside the national park which means we can offer walks led by our Maasai guides. This is a real highlight for guests, who get a different perspective of the landscape and wildlife.
You’ll head out from camp with a Maasai warrior for the walk, which lasts at least an hour. However, if you’re feeling particularly active, you can hike for up to four hours to one of our platforms by the waterhole for a picnic. Along the way, your guide will share his knowledge of the indigenous plants and pick you a Maasai toothbrush from a special tree. Guests love that cultural insight – there’s even a chance to have a traditional spear-throwing competition.
Your guide will point out animal tracks and wildlife you wouldn’t notice from a safari vehicle, like weaver nests that are built in the low-lying trees to avoid snakes coming in and getting the chicks. You’ll be accompanied by security, but most of the wildlife you’ll encounter are plains game like zebras and impala. I was very lucky once to come across a porcupine den and see him sleeping inside – it was fantastic.
