Today is free to relax and explore the capital city of Nairobi. An optional visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi National Park is recommended. This is the most successful rescue programme for elephants in the world, with many of the babies being released back into the wild in Tsavo after around three years of rehabilitation. After breakfast, fly by light aircraft to the Samburu National Reserve. This scorching lowland is named after the nomadic Samburu people who still roam the region by camel. Your base for the next 2 nights is a luxury tented camp on the banks of a river, offering close encounters with elephants throughout the day. Enjoy 2 game drives in the Samburu National Reserve, famous for its own rare species known as the 'Special Five’. These are the Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich and Beisa Oryx. Spotting one of these highly unusual creatures is a truly memorable experience. Exploring the reserve, you’re also likely to spot members of its ancient Samburu community, dressed in crimson robes and adorned with intricately beaded jewellery.
